Here’s what you’ll need

To make your own DIY mushroom lights, you’ll need just a few simple materials:

  • Fairy lights (yellow or white light bulbs work best)
  • Hot glue gun
  • Glue sticks
  • Round Base (I used a plastic lid of a glass jar that I used for another diy project.)
  • Scissors
  • Tape
  • Glass jar or vase of your choice
  • Faux green moss

I found this glass candle holder with wood base that I got for 50% off sale from Michaels and I add a vision of fairy lights and green moss. I knew that I wanted to have a cottage core vibe and that’s when I got the idea for the mushroom lights that I’ve been seeing on Tik Tok.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Mushroom Lights

Step One

Begin by creating the mushroom caps. To shape mushroom caps and prevent damage to the top, I used nonstick cooking spray on the back of a paint palette to create a dome mushroom shape.

Use your hot glue gun and make circles in various sizes, depending on how big you want your mushrooms to be.

Once the glue has dried, peel the mushroom caps off clean off the spray residue and set aside.

Step Two

Glue or tape your fairy lights to the base, then start twisting the wire up to stem. I twisted my fairy lights closer together to make the whole stem light up.

Repeat the process until the string lights are all used. Glue or tape down your stems on your base how ever you like.

Step Three

Use your glue gun to run hot glue along the stem, covering the base and all sides.

Step Four

Once the glue is cooled on all the caps and stems, place a dot of hot glue in the center of the bottom of the mushroom caps and attach to the stems.

  • Experiment with different sizes and shapes of mushroom caps for a more varied look.
  • Add glitter or other embellishments to the caps for a bit of sparkle.
  • Use your mushroom lights in a terrarium, on a piece of wood or as part of a fairy garden display.
  • For a warm and natural feel, you can put them on a windowsill or a mantelpiece.

Believe it or not, more than a thousand distinct types of mushrooms, some of which can be eaten, while others are poisonous, and they come in different shapes and sizes.
